The wise gardener anticipates June in January. — House and Garden
Although we are still tightly held in winter’s icy grip, we can’t let the weather chill our anticipation of spring. It may not feel like it, but January is the time to plan out the garden and order seeds. Thanks to the first few CSA signups, we’ve ordered an initial batch of seeds! Seeds for Leeks, Broccoli, Cabbage, tons of varieties of Tomatoes and Sweet and Spicy Peppers and lots more are on the way. In the upcoming weeks we’ll be sharing our progress as we start seeds in anticipation of the 2014 growing season.
We order our seeds from Johnny’s Selected Seeds a wonderful producer of non-GMO seeds. We’ve found that Johnny’s offers the very best varieties of both heirloom and hybrid seeds. Many of their offerings are organically produced. They don’t just supply farmers. We used to order specialty varieties from them even when we had a “normal” sized garden.
We are having great fun planning out the garden beds, the crop rotation and mixture of varieties. We are determined to deliver an even more unbelievable mix of fresh and delicious vegetables in the CSA. We’re making plans for 75 shares of the CSA, which equates to a lot of beds and a lot of seeds, so please tell your friends and sign up soon.
