We at Where the Redfearn Grows Natural Farms is committed to preserving wildlife habitat and preventing pollution to area streams and ponds. Our son, Josiah, loves to watch birds! He goes on frequent bird walks an has learned a great deal about dozens of species that call our farm home. We thought we’d post some of his descriptions of these native missouri species from time to time. Here is a paragraph he wrote about the Green Herons he frequently sees in our pond.
Green Herons
by Josiah Redfearn
Green Herons are a small type of heron, smaller than Great Blue Herons. Green Herons live in marshy areas and ponds with lots of weeds, like cattails. Green Herons have blueish green wings with a darker blue-green head with vertical white strips on its rusty breast. When upset, Green Herons raise their feathers on the top of their head to make a sort of crest. It’s call is a sharp “Caa! Caa!”
